Career progression isn't a passive process. The people who move up quickly aren't always the most talented people in the room — they're the ones who understand how promotions actually work and position themselves accordingly. Here are seven things you can start doing now.
1. Operate one level above your current title
The most effective way to earn a promotion is to already be doing the job you want to be promoted into. Don't wait for the title — start taking on responsibilities that are slightly above your level. Volunteer for projects with more scope. Offer to lead things. Show your manager that you're already functioning at the next level, and the promotion becomes recognition of reality rather than a gamble.
2. Make your work visible
Good work that no one knows about doesn't advance your career. You don't need to be loud or boastful — but you do need to make sure the right people are aware of your contributions. This means:
- Sharing updates on projects in team meetings or Slack
- Sending a brief summary email when you complete something significant
- Making sure your manager hears about your wins before they hear about anything else
Think of it as documentation, not self-promotion.
3. Quantify everything you do
Numbers make achievements real. "I improved our email open rates" is weak. "I increased our email open rate from 18% to 27% over three months" is a promotion argument. Get into the habit of measuring your work, however approximately. When it's time to make a case for a pay rise or promotion, you'll have the evidence ready.
4. Build relationships up and across
Your career is shaped by more people than just your direct manager. Build genuine relationships with people in other teams, at more senior levels, and at peer level. People advocate for people they know and like. Cross-functional relationships also give you a broader view of the business — and people who understand the whole organisation are significantly more valuable than those who only understand their corner of it.
5. Have an explicit conversation about your ambitions
Most people assume their manager knows they want to progress. Often, they don't. Schedule a specific conversation — not a performance review, a dedicated meeting — where you say clearly: "I want to move into a [specific role/level] role. What would I need to demonstrate to make that happen?" This is not aggressive; it's professional. It gives your manager a chance to support you, and it means you know exactly what the target is.

Scarcity creates value. If you're the only person on your team who understands a particular tool, method, or area of the business, you become indispensable — and indispensable people get promoted and get paid more. Look for gaps in your team's capabilities and fill one of them. It doesn't need to be a technical skill; it could be analytical thinking, stakeholder management, or a particular domain knowledge.
7. Ask for feedback and act on it
People who regularly ask for feedback — and visibly act on it — progress faster than those who wait for feedback to come to them. Ask your manager: "What's one thing I could do differently to be more effective in this role?" Then do it. Then follow up a month later. This signals self-awareness, ambition, and a genuine commitment to growth — all qualities that make someone a strong candidate for promotion.
When to decide it's time to move on
Sometimes, despite everything, the promotion doesn't come. Maybe the company is too flat, or the budget doesn't exist, or your manager isn't an advocate. Knowing when to stop waiting and start looking externally is a skill in itself. If you've had the conversation, done the work, and made the case — and nothing has changed in 12+ months — it may be time to take your progression into your own hands and find it somewhere else.
External moves are often the fastest path to a significant level jump. And with the right interview prep, you can make the most of every opportunity you get.
